Sticks & Stones

When we were children on the playground, someone would make fun of your Mama, or make fun of the fact that your blue jeans were creased, or the fact that your jeans were a little to short. Maybe your shoes were not name brand. But after the insults, you always had the ultimate comeback. You would always say, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

Well, words can hurt. There are people that live with hurt in their life because of words spoken to them. And this is an area we all struggle with from time to time. We generally hurt others with our words two different ways, depending on the type of person we or the circumstance we find ourselves in.

Open Mouth Insert Foot – Sometimes you may open your mouth and out comes something and as soon as the words leave your body you think, “Ohhhhh. If I could reel that back in, I would.”

Ain’t Gonna Do It – There are other people (I think I fall into this category often) that think to themselves, “No. I’m not going to say that. I am NOT going to say that…I’m not going to say that. Nope. I AM going to say that.” And then we let it out.

May we prayerfully consider Proverbs 15:1.

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

May we as a people seek to build one another up. May we choose our words wisely and speak hope and love into other’s lives.
